Here's a fun variation: you now throw three dice, and one is a speed die, which allows for bonuses and faster trips around the board so that you can build your property holdings more quickly.

Before, you had houses and hotels. Now you also have skyscrapers!

The board is much larger, and there are more properties -- one more for each grouping, including a new utility and a train depot.

My favorite twist is the new building shortages feature, which prevents too many building being constructed.

This is the most fun I've had with Monopoly in years. It really has breathed life into an awesome game, and brought back a classic to our game nights!

Experiencing expotential growth and refinement, hand in hand with the popularity and prevalence of Internet and computers all over the world – free online games present themselves as a happening industry, which is tempting, exciting and addictive at the user end.

The free online games are either flash or shockwave based, to allow instant play access to a user online. The user can also choose to download the games at his / her discretion, to suit his / her convenience and preference. These free games are equally enjoyable online at a click's instance, as they are after being downloaded on the hard disk of a user's system.

The industry, offering free flash and shockwave online games on multitude of websites, has evolved to an extent that the variety and themes of the games are almost exhaustive. The superior quality of bright and colorful graphics, in combination with matching sound effects, renders the game mind-boggling and thrilling.

A first time visitor feels so enthralled to witness the wide expanse of these games, closing in at many of his/ her choicest of themes. So much so that he/ she cannot resist going through an absorbing experience of trying at least one of the games, and an eventual promise to return back many more times, in the faithful pursuit of passion for interactive entertainment.

Most of the people find these free of cost online flash and shockwave games so engrossing that they deliberately end up locking themselves within the lazy confines of their home or internet café to play these games without disturbance for hours together, eyes glued to their computer screens and hands undetachable from the keyboard/ mouse.

What's more, the widespread appeal of these games touches all age groups, right from the budding toddlers to the well-groomed adults. Many players tend to spend days and nights hooked-on to these flash and shockwave games, as these avail an unparallel opportunity to play all the regular parlor games plus some new ones, sitting at home, costing only the Internet connection and electricity bill.

The wide variety of free online flash and shockwave games available on net may be broadly classified into action and adventure games, arcade games, board games, card games, casino games, puzzle games, word games, strategy games, sports games, detective theme based games, shooting games et al.

Though shooting games can be clubbed with action and adventure games, their distinct popularity commands them specific mention. Further, while all types of online games have their own share of patrons and fans, the most popular are the board games, which are basically online versions of certain traditional board games, including Chess, Literati, Dominoes and Monopoly. What is more, a surfeit of websites specializes in casino-based games to constitute a separate commercial entity, popularly termed as the ‘Online Casino Industry'.

These games have a magical influence on the players, as the realistic graphics and sound stimuli absorb the players in their own world, be it a Hollywood show or a casino in Las Vegas or a deck of the sunken Titanic. Most of these online games boast of being multi-player games that add a taste of virtual competition to the entire ambiance of the game in question. The competition element renders the playing experience much more exciting and enjoyable.

The online flash and shockwave games are also believed to be beneficial for the players, as these enhance competitive spirit, sportsmanship and inculcate some indispensable qualities, like ability to work hard, patience and perseverance. Certain games also improve the reflexes of the player. Strategy games help in developing thinking.

By Anthony Tripp

The Rules of Jail

There are three ways that you could wind up in Monopoly Jail.

By rolling three doubles in a row

Landing on the Go To Jail space on the Monopoly Board

Drawing a Change or Community Chest card that says Go To Jail

When one of the above three things happens you must go directly to jail, you do not pass Go and you definitely don't collect your $200.

If you land on the actual Jail space on the board (not the Go To Jail space), there's no penalty or fee to pay, you just park your piece in the Just Visiting section of the space and proceed as usual on your next turn.

Now a lot of people think that when you're in jail that you can't collect rent. That's not true. According to the official rules of Monopoly, you can collect rent and buy and sell hotels and houses while in jail.

How To Get Out Of Jail

There are several ways to get out of jail.

Rolling doubles

Using a Get Out of Jail Free card

Paying $50

If none of the above happens before your third roll of the dice, you must pay $50 and proceed the number of spaces on the dice. For example, if your third roll isn't doubles, say it's a 2 and a 1, then you pay $50 and proceed three spaces.

If you do roll doubles before your third try, you proceed the amount of spaces shown on the dice but you don't get to roll again as you normally would when rolling doubles.

Jail Tip:

Since you are allowed to conduct business while in jail, try buying a Get Out Of Jail Free card from one of your opponents.

Jail Factoid:

The Policeman on the Go To Jail space is named Officer Edgar Mallory

Multiple Editions of Board Games
By Victor Epand

Many different board games allow themselves to be periodically updated, with new editions coming out every once in a while. These new editions often feature slight redesigns to the components of the game, such as player tokens, board design, or even a new style to the cards that the game may use.

Sometimes, classic games are even redesigned along different themes, from a special edition to commemorate a certain movie or television show, to special events that may be happening around the world. These games usually maintain the same rules as the traditional, but offer fans a special chance to own a different copy, usually in a limited release, of a beloved game.

Monopoly is one game with many, many different editions. Most popular films and TV shows have a Monopoly edition, with everything from Star Wars to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Simpsons, Disney, and Family Guy are all represented. Fans greatly enjoy these, as it combines a classic game with the novelty of having one of their favorite entertainment sources being featured.

However, Monopoly takes the range of their editions even further. An updated "Here and Now" edition was recently released that doesn't focus solely on Atlantic City properties. By buying either the USA or World edition of "Here and Now," players can purchase and charge rent on famous location both over the United States and the World. This edition of Monopoly is especially popular with players because, before the release of the game, the general public was allowed to vote on the locations being chosen, making these editions of the game have a personal touch.

The Game of Life released another variation of itself, called Life: Twists and Turns. This game presents a unique twist on the classic game and not solely because it works primarily on an electronic base. At the beginning of the game, players are each given an electronic "lifepod," which controls not only the length of the game, but all of their money, foregoing all of the paper bills that were once used. The length of the game can be determined in "years" before the game starts, letting players live out different ages of a life during a traditional game.

The game also works differently as the amount of money that a player ends the game with isn't the sole determining factor of who wins. In this edition, players compete for different "Life Points" and the player with the most Life Points in the end of the game is declared the winner.

Scene It is a popular DVD based game that normally features clips from different movies and encourages players to have a wide base of knowledge in all things cinema in order to compete. This format, however, lends itself easily to many different editions of the game. Scene It can be found not only for a general movie category, but special Harry Potter, Friends, and Disney editions can be found, among many other varieties.

With many different forms of media available, games often lend themselves to different variations and even themes that can be played through them. This is important for the board game industry, however, for the public loves re-invention and if things stay the same for too long, the games can grow boring and fade away.

Victor Epand is an expert consultant for board games, chess boards, and dungeons and dragons miniatures. You will find all these things and more if you visit editions of board games and chess boards.

Successful entrepreneurs are people that always see opportunity in any situation. By nature they are positive and constantly seek innovations that address wants and needs that they identify in their contemporary environment. Currently we are in a dark economic period, and this will prove to be a fertile time for the introduction of novel innovations that will reward their creators with significant profit.

The world's most famous, widely played and sold board game is Monopoly. Lizzie Phillips created the first version of the game that was to evolve into modern Monopoly. Her game was meant to promote the single tax theories of Henry George, and the play rules were heavily influenced by his populist philosophy. Ms. Phillips filed several patents on versions of her game around 1904. She enjoyed modest commercial success.

The game and its play rules were tweaked through the years. Subsequently, the various forms of Ms. Phillips rudimentary game that were introduced never enjoyed great sales but the game never quite disappeared. Then came the Great Depression.

The many causes of the Great Depression have been well chronicled and today most people are aware of at least the broadest reasons for the implosion of the world's economy. Greed was the cause most often stated at the time to assign blame. Society was highly segmented by wealth, education, geography and class. Charles Darrow recognized opportunity in the misery of so many and crafted his classic version of Monopoly to address the perceived social sins of the times.

The play rules and component elements of Monopoly, little changed to this day, reflected the deep divisions in society. Darrow's game, launched in 1935, displayed the whole range of opportunities for failure and success that could occur in a capitalist society. You could go to jail, be taxed, be fined, go bankrupt or land on owned property and have to pay rents to the hated landlord if the dice were unlucky for a player.

Likewise, you could "pass go" and collect $200, win dividends, buy property, build houses and hotels, own railroads (the classic metaphor for greedy capitalists) and collect rents if the roll of the dice favored you. Also, you could bankrupt your opponents and this occurred with frightening regularity in real life during the 1930's.

Clearly Monopoly was a game that resonated during the darkest days of the Depression and still works as a leisure activity to this very day. Darrow attained great wealth from the sales of his version of monopoly. Monopoly was licensed by the British Secret Service through John Waddington Ltd. during World War II. The International Red Cross forwarded Monopoly sets to British war prisoners incarcerated in Nazi camps. These games included hidden packets of real money, maps, communication devices and tools for use in escape attempts.

Parker Brothers secured the rights to Monopoly and succeeded in internationalizing the game by assigning country-specific play features. For instance, in the American game, the most prized real estate deeds to own are Park Place and Boardwalk. In the British version the most prized blocks of real estate to own are the very tweedy Park Lane and Mayfair.

The game's origins, history and ownership are surrounded by significant controversy. Parker Brothers attributes all of the creative, copyrights, play rules and component design of Monopoly to Charles Darrow. This lead to decades of legal wrangling over the true ownership as Lizzie Phillips and others claimed creative ownership of the game. These legal issues were not settled until the 1980's.

There are a number of lessons for modern inventors to be taken from the profitable, but stormy history of the simple board game of Monopoly.

If the game has play rules that anyone can easily understand, play is fluid, play pieces are simple and attractive; then there is potential for commercial success.

You must protect your game with copyrights, trademarks and patents where applicable. Not properly protecting these valuable assets lead to much disagreement and expensive, extended legal wrangling in the case of Monopoly.

My consumer product development and marketing consulting company sees more toy and game submissions than almost any other product category. The barriers to entry in this class of trade are reasonable if the inventor is willing and able to bootstrap their offering. We recommend a play focus group to confirm that target players affirm the attractiveness and commercial appeal of the game or toy.

Recently, for a class project, a third grade teacher let us borrow her class of 23 students to play a new sports board game for half a day. We filmed the session. We also had the kids answer a series of simple questions of their play experience. Based on their reactions, we were able to adjust one basic play rule to further simplify and expand the appeal of the game. The change resulted in the final result of the game becoming much more closely contested, therefore exciting.

The perfect time to launch a new product is always now. Time is never the friend of the entrepreneur. If you wait for the perfect time, the best market conditions to appear, someone can beat you to market with a product that cannibalizes the best parts of your idea. This happens all too often. Waiting for a better climate is an excuse for inaction and a sure path to mediocrity. Charles Darrow's launch of Monopoly in 1935 at the height of the Great Depression is a wonderful example to study.

Geoff Ficke has been a serial entrepreneur for almost 50 years. As a small boy, earning his spending money doing odd jobs in the neighborhood, he learned the value of selling himself, offering service and value for money.

After putting himself through the University of Kentucky (B.A. Broadcast Journalism, 1969) and serving in the United States Marine Corp, Mr. Ficke commenced a career in the cosmetic industry. After rising to National Sales Manager for Vidal Sassoon Hair Care at age 28, he then launched a number of ventures, including Rubigo Cosmetics, Parfums Pierre Wulff Paris, Le Bain Couture and Fashion Fragrance.

Geoff Ficke and his consulting firm, Duquesa Marketing, Inc. (http://www.duquesamarketing.com) has assisted businesses large and small, domestic and international, entrepreneurs, inventors and students in new product development, capital formation, licensing, marketing, sales and business plans and successful implementation of his customized strategies.

Whether it is sunny or cold, board games can keep a company busy and transform a dull or not so special evening to a competition for people with strong nerves. Last time my friends and I decided to play a board game, we all had such a lovely time that we forgot what time it was up until one of my friends pointed out that the sun was rising! It is true that it a board game is exciting and the teams are willing to invest time in finding the best strategy so as to win their opponents, a game can have a long duration, before someone looses or quits. But what exactly is a board game and why do board games have had such a success?

A board game is any game played on a board, which is represented by a marked surface, with counters or pieces that are placed on, removed from, or moved across this board. But although board games are considered as simple family entertainment, there are many different types and classifications of board games, created as simplified simulations of real life or on the contrary do not attempt to imitate reality. One example from each category is Monopoly, for instance, since it is a game where one can buy or sell property, resembling the real estate market, while Trivial Pursuit is a trivia game, examining the players' knowledge-base on a variety of categories.

Probably you and I have played board games inherited from ancient cultures and societies. Evidence reveals that board games were played since 3,500 BC in Egypt, while the Royal Tombs of Ur contained, among other things, the Royal Game of Ur. But even though taking my favorite board game with me is a thought I should consider at some point, since I still belong to the living side for the river of life, I should probably continue to have fun and invite friends over to play board games and learn something new.

It is worth noting at this point, that the board game industry is a rather competitive one, this comes as no surprise, full of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Hasbro, one of the biggest companies worldwide owns a variety of games and sells them under different brand names to its operating markets since it is extremely difficult finding a global name and strategy and promoting the game with the use of the same message to all customers trying to cover their similar needs.

Finally, it is important to know that board games are distinguished between the ones which are based on luck and those that based on strategy. But the truth is that some games include both elements and it is not advisable to classify them according to the one and not the other feature. Just play them!

Like with any typical Monopoly game the dice that you would be using for online Monopoly would be two standard six-sided dice. But the main thing to note is that in online Monopoly the Monopoly dice will work like real dice. That's because a certain algorithm is used to help with determining what appears more often.

First, it should be noted that the way the virtual dice roll is that they will work according to the odds that two six-sided dice would land. This means that you will not be getting numbers at random. Instead, you will be getting results according to the actual odds.

Each number has its own certain odds over how likely you would get a certain number. This is an essential part to consider for Monopoly strategy in that you can use a potential future roll to determine what your best strategy would be. This is especially useful later in the game when your opponents have houses and hotels.

For instance, you will be more likely to roll a seven than any other type of combination in the game. That's because there are three combinations that can be used for a seven - 1-6, 2-5 or 3-4. Since it is not guaranteed that you will easily be able to roll doubles this will make for the most common number. In fact, you will have an approximate odds of seventeen percent that you will roll a seven.

Next is six and eight. The odds of rolling one of those is fifteen percent. For a five or nine the odds are eleven percent that you would get one of those numbers. A four or ten would have nine percent odds.

The smaller and larger numbers would be less likely for you to get because there are fewer combinations to use for them. In fact, you cannot be guaranteed doubles all the time, so these numbers would be hard. For three or eleven you would have a five percent chance of getting one of those. For two or twelve you would only have a two percent chance.

As for doubles you would have a seventeen percent chance of getting one of those rolls. With six possible doubles combinations over twenty-one different types of rolls that can be used this is something that should definitely be considered.
